Child Support Attorneys Serving DuPage County Illinois
Whether it is in the context of a divorce or not, child support is a highly contested issue that many parents face. At the Illinois law office of Andrew Cores Family Law Group, our lawyers provide representation to married and unmarried parents that are seeking to establish the correct amount of child support for their children.
Updates to the Illinois Child Support Law in July 2017
Child support is calculated by entering certain numbers, such as income and expenses, into a formula created by the Illinois Department Health and Family Services. In July 2017, a new child support law went into effect changing the formula that is used to calculate child support. Previously, the formula was based only on the non-custodial parent’s income and the number of children. Under the new law, the court will determine the amount of support required to care for a child based on the parents’ combined income, and that amount will be divided between the parents based on their respective incomes and their amount of parenting time and parental responsibility.
Our firm can take the time to explain how the new child support law affects you and how these calculations will determine the amount of support you must pay or receive, as well as any other child support guidelines that must be followed pursuant to the recent change in the law.
Altering Child Support Orders and Child Support Enforcement
While the calculation of the child support you pay or receive may be different under the new law, a preexisting child support order cannot be modified unless the circumstances of either party have substantially changed. Significant changes in circumstance can include a considerable increase or decrease in wages, the loss of a job, or changes to a child’s needs. A lawyer at our firm can assist you in dealing with all aspects of child support modification and enforcement.
